naelstrof / maim

maim (make image) takes screenshots of your desktop. It has options to take only a region, and relies on slop to query for regions. maim is supposed to be an improved scrot.

Description

When I am using maim to get a screenshot, sometimes I just got my desktop image.

sometimes I just got my desktop image

Please elaborate. How do you run maim? Which windows do you have open when this bug happens? What is your desktop environment / window manager?

jczhang02 commented 2 years ago

maim_args: -u -b 3 -m 5 de: awesomewm maybe any windows

foxpy commented 2 years ago

To be honest I still don't understand anything :D Could you provide two screenshot samples? The expected one and the buggy one.

jczhang02 commented 2 years ago

Sorry, the only examples i can give like this:

Maim can't capture my terminal as the secon image.

image image

foxpy commented 2 years ago

Do I understand correctly that your terminal is basically a blur-transparent window and sometimes it does not get into screenshot?

jczhang02 commented 2 years ago

yes

foxpy commented 2 years ago

Running Archlinux, I have installed aur/picom-git and now I get these results when I run it with your config file:

[ 12/16/2021 12:56:37.040 get_cfg WARN ] Dual-kawase blur is not implemented by the legacy backends, you must use the `experimental-backends` option.
[ 12/16/2021 12:56:37.133 init_render WARN ] Old backends only support blur method "kernel". Your blur setting will not be applied

Is it okay?

foxpy commented 2 years ago

Little update: my video output started to lag and I had to reboot in order to fix this. Apparently something is wrong with picom-git, or with your picom config, or with a combination of your picom config and my system. :)

My system: Archlinux, Xorg, i3wm, xf86-video-intel with "TearFree" option, xcompmgr.

jczhang02 commented 2 years ago

U do not use picom? I really do not know how to configure about it in picom config.

foxpy commented 2 years ago

U do not use picom?

I don't. xcompmgr does everything I need with low overhead.

jczhang02 commented 2 years ago

Sorry for this issue. Failed to figure out how to solve this problem!

Failed to figure out how to solve this problem!

So why do you close the issue? If there is an unresolved problem — there should be an open issue for it.

It doesn't matter if we can't resolve it right now, but what if someone looks at issue in future and actually provides some help? Drew DeVault has written a good article about this and I encourage you to read it: https://drewdevault.com/2021/10/26/stalebot.html
