Rollup into Menubar or Dock Icon #373

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What feature or enhancement do you propose?
As an option, Rollup should be able to occur into the menubar widget and/or
dock icon, rather than displaying on screen.

In the case of the menubar widget it should pulse, or become badged, while the
dock icon would display a badge (and optionally bounce). In both cases
indicating that Rollup has occurred, and with badging would indicate how many
messages are pending.

Clicking the menubar would show Rollup within its menu (or a sub-menu to
separate from History?) while the Dock would do the same if right-clicked, or
if clicked would display the normal Rollup list in the centre of the screen.

What problem does it solve/What benefit does it provide?
As with issue #371 this would provide a more minimal display for Rollup,
without the intrusive central display that we currently have. Unlike #371
however this would require the user to have the menubar widget and/or dock icon
enabled.

Ideally this issue should be considered alongside #371 (which is more
universal), and preferably be added as well as an option so that users have
full control over how they address Rollup. As currently it's either a case of
putting up with it, or disabling it.

The badging is a good idea, most people are confused by the pulsing in 1.3.1
that you requested it seems. I like the pulsing, but perhaps badging is easier
to understand. Thoughts on how to make that easier to understand versus
switching to badging the menubar icon?

We cannot assume the user has a dock or menubar icon. We don't know what
percentage of people are not using these, but if I had to guess I'd say it's a
high amount of people disabling the dock icon and menubar icon since it was one
of our biggest requests after 1.3 came out. How does that play into this? :)

How about if it docked to the side of the screen and only appeared when the
cursor was near?

Sorry for the delay, just wanted to respond to comment #1. Basically I'm not
sure that accommodating users without a menubar widget or dock icon is
something you'd really want to do, as it'd mean maintaining a third option.
Besides which, I think that with this feature more users may be encouraged to
enable either the menubar widget or dock icon in order to take advantage of it;
the feature could possibly be presented in such a way that it will ask the user
to enable or one or both features.

Otherwise I think that the third-option could possibly be covered by issue
#372, proposing the ability to have Rollup appear as a less obtrusive
notification.
