actually, i may have figured this out.
when i initially launch itunes after the option-restore 1.0.2. - it asks, do
you want
to set this up as an old or new iphone. i kept hitting old.
so, i hit 'new' this time, and it seems to be working. i'm currently
jailbreaking 1.1.2.

that was indeed it (believe me, i've reinstalled 1.0.2 about 20 times this
morning).
hope this helps someone else.

actually i'm in kind of a bind:
it appears i have to either choose between
a clean, fresh jailbreakable iphone, or,
an iphone that has all my data.
i can't figure out how to have both jailbreakability and my texts/etc.

(my previous texts/data that is.)

Hi,
I may be missing something, but can't you then go sync your data back in after
you jailbreak your phone?
In other words, when you are updating/breaking, tell it is a new phone, then
go back into iTunes and sync it
with your data?
I've done this a few times (update on one machine, sync to another.)
Which bit isn't working as expected?
Cheers,
Jim

ok,
in both of my scenarios, i follow the exact same steps.
1) the difference is in one, where i associate the 1.02'd phone (because you
have to
go back to itunes at some point to go 1.12) with my backup, i don't get to the
point
of 1.12, instead i get, after trying to do the final step of updating to 1.12)
i get
•••the iphone "name" could not be updated. an unknown error occurred
(1603).•••
2) if, however, i don't associate with the backup (choose 'new phone'), i can
update
from 1.02jb'd to 1.12. and the 1.12 is jailbreakable. but, it comes at the
price of,
now, my phone considers itself new (so i have no notes or anything), and
refuses to
see the backup data (so i can't get back to where i have the data either.
does this make sense?

and this is for phone specific data. i can always resync contacts/bookmarks/etc.
the key here is i'm unable to get the data i want to restore (not re-syncable
data).

ok - here's some more on the matter.
i'll refer to my two routes of upgrading as "new->update 1.12" and
"restore->update 1.12"
sometimes on "restore->update 1.12", i get nothing. it just sits and waits
forever.
then i get that error.
then other times, it actually goes through with it (the iphone blinks 1.02
yellow dfu
mode for a second near the beginning of the process)… but, i then get the
endless
reboot cycle.
