@phelix Is this code Windows-specific, or will it work near-verbatim on other OS's? I'd prefer not to add more OS-specific things to master, but if the code is near-identical on Linux/OSX then I probably wouldn't have any problem with it.

Should work out of the box on linux and mac. I never tested it, though. Somebody needs to get a mac / linux GUI version going.

@JeremyRand I'd like to merge this now. I have other commits waiting. If you would like to change the way we handle OS specific stuff please create a separate issue.

@phelix If you think this will work fine on Linux and OS X, then I don't have an objection to merging. If there are bugs, they can be fixed in future pull requests. Note I haven't tested it on Linux.
