We used to set the axis name closer to the operator, but added struts to make the axis names align when they're next to each other.

A related issue is that \left( A \ndot{ax} B \right) makes the parens really large. Using \smash on the axis name would fix it, I think, but could lead to collisions.

I really like that they align... Maybe this is just how it has to be.
