Porting the commits from https://github.com/napalm-automation/napalm-base/pull/319 into the master branch. Preparing the final 1.0.0 release.

FYI we already have a PR prepared to release 0.26.0: https://github.com/napalm-automation/napalm-base/pull/317, but @dbarrosop mentioned to not merge it at that time. I'm not sure if the changes from there have been ported / we want to port them into the main package.
