This merges npe2 into main so as to keep main's history intact (as opposed to forcing anything or just renaming npe2 to main), I created a branch of main called npe1 that can stay there for archive purposes.
this PR is identical to the npe2 branch: git diff merge-npe2 npe2 (shows nothing)
