.wslconfig is simply:
[wsl2]
kernel=C:\\Users\\evere\\wsl_user_kernel
Thank you for open the Issue! Don't that anything works because /etc/wsl.conf does not exist.
Tried that Kernel and the results were the same. debug-dmesg.log html kernel log: debug-wsl2_arch-dmesg.html.gz
Attention to 9pnet: Could not find request transport: virtio
This is done before the drvfs
error.
Since build 19640 WLS2 is using virtio transport on 9p. After enabling it everything works again.
Confirmed not working. Just tried linked kernel.
An error occurred mounting one of your file systems. Please run 'dmesg' for more details.
Dmesg with linked kernel attached.

You can upload by D&D.
Try this kernel with transport=virtio support. (although this is kernel 4.19.121 from Microsoft) bzImage.txt
Try this kernel with transport=virtio support. (although this is kernel 4.19.121 from Microsoft) bzImage.txt
It worked!

Works.
It would have been helpful to know that you all are on the Fast Ring :( although it is my fault for not asking in the first place.
This should be fixed with this kernel, let me know if not.
Hmm... I keep getting weird errors when I try to start.
The virtual machine or container was forcefully exited.
[process exited with code 4294967295]
It doesn't start even in my environment.
@nathanchance For me in 19645 works. But dmesg shows this:
[ 3.161218] swapon: swapfile has holes
[ 3.161244] ERROR: CreateSwap:819: swapon failed 22
And can't create the swap file. I have not found a solution yet for this in kernel 5.7.x.
How about this one? If it works, please upload a dmesg.
Unfortunately this doesn't work. Resources are exhausted and it becomes Green Screen.
The virtual machine or container was forcefully exited.
to
The operation timed out because a response was not received from the virtual machine or container.
Back after my computer locked up and I had to force reboot it.
I do not want to go onto the Fast Ring to look into this. @onomatopellan is there a way I can try to reproduce this on the Slow Ring?

Virtual machine possibly.
That's how I'm running Fast Ring, in a Hyper VM.
Indeed,
But does Hyper-V work on a VM?
Oh, Hyper-V with Hyper-V
Doesn't running WSL2 within a VM require nested virtualization?
I'm running fast ring without a vm.
On latest build nested virtualization works for intel and AMD.
Doesn't running WSL2 within a VM require nested virtualization?
Oh yeah... it does.
This may be helpful for collecting debug logging: https://github.com/Microsoft/WSL/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md#8-detailed-logs
For intel follow this https://boxofcables.dev/trying-wsl2-on-hyper-v/
Correct me if I am wrong but nested virtualization comes from the host, not the guest, meaning that for an AMD processor (which I have), I would need to jump on to the Fast Ring to get access to that. Guess I'll just bite the bullet so I can try and debug this.
@nathanchance you are right, I forgot the insider build needs to be installed as the host for AMD nested virtualization.
I just compiled latest 5.7.0 kernel from "next" branch with virtio 9p transport. Try if it works: bzImage.txt
Swap problem still happens though.
It works.
cat /proc/version
Linux version 5.7.0-next-20200603-microsoft-standard+ (onoma@DESKTOP-36G0F23) (gcc (Ubuntu 9.2.1-9ubuntu2) 9.2.1 20191008, GNU ld (GNU Binutils for Ubuntu) 2.33) #5 SMP Fri Jun 12 20:37:14 CEST 2020
Computer locked up and I had to force reboot (again) a few minutes after I tried to load the wsl build that supposedly wouldn't start to collect logs. I had even used wsl.exe --shutdown
before ending logging. A few minutes later, it locked up.
Great, it's not the latest kernel commit though. I'll download it again.
@Justsnoopy30 yep, after trying many kernels I had to restart the VM too.
@koumaza (That's also why the project of mine we were talking on suddenly went down)
I collected logs .ETL logs before it locked up, however.
Although story changes, the contents of uname -a
and /proc/version
are different, did you know??
Compare v17 with v18.
I was surprised when I saw the version. xD There are such restrictions in VsCode...
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/kernel-release-notes Take a look at this 4.19.121-microsoft-standard has been released.
Some cryptic logs from the kernel linked earlier that wouldn't start up and caused PC lockup a few minutes later (open with event viewer, click open saved log in "Action" at the top bar): https://hyperchat.cf/cdn/TempKernelLogs/lxcore_kernel.etl https://hyperchat.cf/cdn/TempKernelLogs/lxcore_service.etl https://hyperchat.cf/cdn/TempKernelLogs/lxcore_user.etl https://hyperchat.cf/cdn/TempKernelLogs/lxcore_kernel.evtx https://hyperchat.cf/cdn/TempKernelLogs/lxcore_service.evtx https://hyperchat.cf/cdn/TempKernelLogs/lxcore_user.evtx
Ok so I tried compiling latest "next" kernel and with the default config it won't boot. So I used this .config file and now it should work. Try the kernel: bzImage.txt
WSL boots up and mounts the C drive successfully, however uname -r
tells me: 4.19.104-microsoft-standard
It may be because of d70f2f9
Could someone possibly send me an image with that hack removed? I don't personally fancy using a hack and faking the kernel release just to make "VS Code's Remote WSL plugin" work (which I do not use).
Just run cat /proc/version
if you want the accurate version information.
May be to raise it to 4.19.121
https://github.com/microsoft/WSL2-Linux-Kernel/releases/tag/4.19.121-microsoft-standard
Just run
cat /proc/version
if you want the accurate version information.
Ah. 5.7.0-next-20200612-microsoft-standard
Still, it's not good to do that. Someone could just open an issue on the VSCode plugin asking for it to work on unofficial kernels.
Still, it's not good to do that.
It's a damned if I do (because people complain about uname -r
not being accurate), damned if I don't (because then people complain about VS Code's Remote Plugin not working) situation.
Someone could just open an issue on the VSCode plugin asking for it to work on unofficial kernels.
Be my guest. It's easier to add that hack than it is to wait for Microsoft to fix it.
Ok so I tried compiling latest "next" kernel and with the default config it won't boot. So I used this .config file and now it should work. Try the kernel: bzImage.txt
Couldn't this repo be updated with that config then?

Shouldn't this repo be updated with that config then?
No, I am still trying to fully uncover the issue.

Hmm okay.
I sent some links to logs earlier.
https://github.com/microsoft/vscode-remote-release not opensource...?
Spun off from #1.
@koumaza @Justsnoopy30 are you guys doing anything with
/etc/wsl.conf
?As just a starting point to debugging, could you please try this kernel?
Extract the zip.
Update your
.wslconfig
to point to that kernel.Run
wsl --shutdown
then reopen your browser. If it works, just let me know and I'll do another kernel. If not, run
dmesg > dmesg.log
then upload that dmesg.log here.
