@nayafia amazing guide! I wish I had this when I was getting started in open source. Thank you for creating it for the community.

I added a new section for consideration.

It is a futuristic concept (but I think valuable in the near future) - the user donates to an open source project by donating CPU cycles. Those CPU cycles are used to generate crypto currency.

What is neat about it, is it makes it possible to accept donations worldwide and with relatively less friction. The donor doesn't need a credit card or even a bank account. And the project benefitting from the donations does not need a merchant account.

What do you think?

Here's an example of a donation page: http://www.opensourcecitizen.org/project?url=github.com%2Fmotdotla%2Fnode-lambda And an example of the README badge: https://github.com/motdotla/node-lambda-template

Hey @motdotla, thanks for the kind words!

This is a really cool funding mechanism that I hadn't seen before. I'm hesitant to add it as a dedicated section, because it isn't yet in widespread use. There aren't many examples of providers, nor are there many examples of open source projects that are using it. (I didn't add the freemium license or advertising sections, for example, until I saw enough examples of them in the wild.)

Wish there was a section to keep "Experiments" or "Crazy ideas" but even that feels a bit editorialized to me. Thanks for flagging it. If it keeps coming up, I'll consider adding a new section.

Makes good sense. Thank you for considering it!
