Recently GitHub released API v. 3.0 that allows some specific page operations that were not possible before:
get custom URL if configured (to figure out the result URL where to redirect after publishing, now it's guessing) https://docs.github.com/en/free-pro-team@latest/rest/reference/repos#get-a-github-pages-site
get latest build status (to ensure the page is actually published, now in most cases it just redirects to 404, when page is not built yet)
