The lilypond-plugin for jedit offers a nice feature concerning bar checks. 
Whenever one adds a bar line | to the lilypond file, it shows the total value 
of the notes since the last bar line.
It would be great to have such a feature in frescobaldi as well, as it helps 
reducing typing mistakes, especially when transcribing from old printings 
(~1600) that lack regular bar lines such that one has to add these by hands.

While using frescobaldi I actually came up with some improvement to my original 
suggestion. Apart from briefly showing the value of notes at the bar checks, 
one could also permanently mark those bar checks in red where the checking 
gives the wrong result (although this might be more difficult to implement as 
you must precisely know the bar type at the given check), so that you find the 
wrong places more easily.

While at it...

I organise my melodies as:

  R1  |  % 1
  R1  |  % 2
  a1~   |  % 3
  a2~  a4.  r8   |  % 4
  d,8.  d16~  d8  d8  d8.  e16~  e8   fis8(   |  % 5

It would be nice if it were possible to add/remove/resequence the % barnumber 
comments.
