Server Install needs documentation #1

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Try to install.
2. Stare blankly and wonder how.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
We should have at least a minimal list of steps to install.

I've put a basic outline of how to install on a wiki page and copied it to a 
howto
file in the doc/ directory.

Some more details of installation issues will be forthcoming.
