Fix statistics #5

Hi Nick, Here is a pull request for code changes which fixes statistics output. It simply tracks which mode you are in and accumulates the time spent for each operation, then the read/write stats are accurate.

I've done a code review on this one - I haven't actually tested the code yet!

Can you fix up, squash all the commits into one then force push back to this branch please?
