Localization #29

I am saddened that the program is in English only. I suggest to localize the program. I am ready to assist in the translation into Russian. (For example, you can use the service Crowdin or any other. Crowdin is free for Open source projects.)

Thanks for your interest in iPerf! I am French myself and understand the value of translating user interfaces, however I didn't want to go with an automatic service that I couldn't guarantee would be of sufficient quality (these services usually use dictionaries, that approach can miss context specifically in specialised apps like this one). iPerf itself is not localised as far as I am aware, and the UI is simple enough (with pre-filled fields) that I didn't see as much of a need to translate it. That also requires quite a bit of UI testing across all screen sizes to make sure longer / shorter strings don't break the layout, and for every future UI update I would need help translating the new text to the various languages which is a time consuming additional step.

Would you like to contribute by translating the main screen, or the help text as well? In either case, I would welcome either a document with the various fields translated, or a full pull request if you feel comfortable with iOS's localisation APIs. If you send me the translated strings, I'll put in the effort to translate the UI.

@ndfred Crowdin isn't gratis for libre software projects, it is only gratis for projects that have no source of income, and only if contributing to their closed translation memory. It is a lackluster tool that employs tracking and spying. Use Hosted Weblate instead.

Will contribute in the languages I know if I see it on there :)

I don’t want to comment on the merits of each of these platforms, but would rather have actual people who have seen the interface translate them. If we are to support a new language, I would also like to see the help section translated, which we don’t have a great way to do right now.

@ndfred In the Weblate UI you can turn on a function for adding all components in any language that exists. https://docs.weblate.org/en/latest/admin/addons.html?highlight=consistency#language-consistency You can also upload screenshots that are shown next to the strings, use labels, and add text for context next to each string. I can help with that if you add "kingu" as an admin on Hosted Weblate for your project. I tried to help out in #32

Just had a quick look at Weblate, installation seems fairly involved (I guess I wouldn't be able to get a hosted instance, and I am not really keen on spinning up an AWS instance just for that). If an when I rework the UI, I'll probably add localisation and a decent layout for translation files with GitHub PRs to add new translations. We would then also need App Store text, and maybe other stuff I am not really thinking about right now.
