Checking for updates takes too much time if there are multiple repos and this is blocking time. We should rewrite it to:

make updatesAvailable optional or an enum so that it can have three statuses (yes/no/don't know yet)
make the fetch and check steps run in async
make the frontend check status again until the statuses are resolved
