To make the examples visible to users potentially the best location would be a collapsible section in the jupyterlab-new-launcher (when installed).
This could be done by expanding the ILauncher.IItemOptions to include a custom render() method, and creating a section for each non-standard category. This would also make the new jupyterlab-new-launcher work with juyptext
Alternatively, jupyterlab-new-launcher could expose a custom .addSection() method accepting a section name, state and a ReactWidget - this might be better for our use case as we could customize it more.
