10 replicates of three speeds sounds good (and the number of clicks needed is hopefully achievable). Mixing speeds on any given game is fine (and will help to hold interest).
It's a cool idea to compare the moving target patterns to already evolved static patterns, but at the moment we're prioritising the evolution of patterns of moving targets. We could chat to Martin in the future about combing our results though.
There are now 3 speed populations working (and visible in 'best patterns'). Only one replicate at the moment for testing purposes but I can increase this when it's appropriate.
The speeds are currently 1, 1.5 and 2 - might be better to make more of a difference between them - let me know.
Just checking that this is ok - I'm not around after this week for a couple of weeks, so let me know if the speeds need tweaking.
Seems okay to me for now - not sure it's totally obvious that there are 3 populations when you're playing but I don't think that matters too much. The fast one is hard when you're playing with a mouse!
"We could potentially have nine populations: 3 fast, 3 medium and 3 slow, but then this may mean we need an unachievable number of players, do you have any thoughts? Otherwise 6 populations of two different speeds may be a more realistic target. Having said this, it would also be quite good if participants can still see a mix of target speeds on any given game (so sampling from all the populations on each game) - is that possible with the current set up or would that be too complicated?"
Mixing is fine - but key decision on players needed is how many replicates you need. We had 12 (I think) on egglab, each with 3 populations based on nest site, so 36 total.
Bear in mind we need 640 clicks to advance a single generation of a single population - and it seems to take around 10 generations to start getting good results.
So I guess we need to prioritise what you want to compare. one idea could be to use the same backgrounds as egglab and compare the moving to the already evolved static patterns?
But 3 speeds sounds achievable.
