Less invasive approach to fixing #778 #779

Upgrading ruby versions on staging/prod should do the trick (and is probably a good idea in general) - but this fix has a much less invasive approach, if we decide to go with that.

I tested this locally using the same (old) version of Ruby that's on staging, and the NameError gets caught successfully.

Nice, yeah that fixed it. And yeah, making sure our Ruby versions are the same is still something we should do - Jake's on it
