this branch has effectively become main. it started out "experimental", but at this point I have been working exclusively from/on it for the past few months, and it has solidified and the approach been proven out.
so, seems reasonable to merge it.
I'm not going to squash any commits because I think the full, gory history is useful for knowing how we got where we are.
