[WIP] small fixes #34

Prior to further work I think the indentation should be restored to a sane state. Replace all tab characters with 4 spaces. Manual fixups for the remaining issues done afterwards.

While there also fix small glitches in comments

The switch case indentation could be done differently, I can separate those in different commits if they are controversial.

Any hints as to "fix" the HEREDOCs too ?
