AWS is the industry standard for Cloud Computing. In many instances knowing how to write code is not enough. Knowing how to effectively deploy your application is essential and increasingly knowing how to deploy to AWS specifically is a way to stand out on one's résumé. Those with a certification gain an official confirmation of their knowledge.
In my experience, the AWS certification is a guarantee of employment in certain sectors. I haven't needed it so far, but I've heard hiring managers hire a candidate based on this differentiator.
I don't feel that I need to spend a couple of months reading/studying to do an exam. But I also don't think it will hurt me.
My goal is to deploy an Elixir/Phoenix Web Application to AWS using Cloud Formation see: https://github.com/dwyl/learn-devops/issues/74 if I can fully automate deployment including database key management etc. I will be very happy.

There was no such thing as Autoscaling - we had to write our own code to determine server load and launch new instances and terminate unused capacity -
