How to Propagate from Clippings 🌱 #17

Just axsked Gooogle the following question:

“should i add npk to water to encourage clippings to root?”

And the top result is: “A Foolproof Guide to Propagate Plants in Water for Beginners”: https://bloomsprouts.com/propagating-plants-in-water/

Reading it now.

For context I’m in Landim and just collected 6 clippings of Ficus Pulmia:

the last couple of times I’ve attempted this the clippings have died. I suspect the reason they died is because I left them in the air for too long before putting them in water (~6h).

Of the 16 clippings I got in March 2021, they all rooted but only 10 survived. 6 were strong and were planted in our garden. But we need many more. So today I put them directly in water immediately and covered in this bottle contraption to secure the moisture till they get home. 🤞🏼🌱

Found another two containers in the trash and repurposed them for clippings:

These bring my clipping haul up to 16 for the day. 👌 (Tomorrow I will bring more jars and get another 20)

Need to head to Leroy ASAP to buy more rooting hormone: https://www.leroymerlin.pt/produtos/jardim/adubos-e-tratamento-de-plantas/adubos/enraizante-compo-agrosil-700g-11244380.html

What I learned from reading the post mentioned in the OP:

  1. Cut the clipping ~3cm below the node.
  2. Remove any leaves that will be below the water line as they will rot and compromise the rooting process.
  3. get your clippings into water as soon as possible as they start to die immediately after being cut. ⏳
  4. Use a rooting hormone/powder to encourage rooting or a water soluble fertiliser. I will be collecting the rooting hormone from Leroy this evening or tomorrow morning.
  5. Don’t leave the clippings in direct sunlight as they will dehydrate too fast. ☀️
  6. Change the water every 3-5 days to ensure it doesn’t accumulate bacteria 🦠
  7. Keep an eye out for rooting and as soon as the roots appear to be establishing, transfer the clippings to soil where they will root slower but will ultimately be stronger in the long term.
  8. Tap water is fine, rain water is better, fish tank water is even better as it has more nitrates; hence aquaponics. 🐟

most of this I knew, but changing the water more regularly is what I will do differently this time. 💭

to cover the whole exterior of @home going to need at least another 20 ficus pulmia plants. and for the sunroom, another 20. 🌱

gotta get cracking.
