This is a question I keep returning to in my quest to understand why some people become intellectual "outliers".

The National Institute for Health concludes that:

"Our brains are all made of the same stuff. Despite individual and ethnic genetic diversity, our prefrontal cortex shows a consistent molecular architecture."

Scientists believe that at least one region of the brain — the hippocampus — continues to create new neurons throughout life.

Interestingly, this brain region is involved in learning and memory. The hippocampus forms memories of events and experiences.
