Historically, I have avoided spending money on Software for two reasons: a) I think all software should be Open Source and it pains me to buy anything closed-source! ⛔️
b) Commercial (closed-source) software is a massive money grab; either they have a subscription model or require regular paid upgrades. 💸
Adobe Creative Suite
Adobe make some of the best "creative" software. I learned/used Photoshop, InDesign and illustrator for most of my work from 2005 - 2010, and it really was the "best tool" for the job. Nothing in Open Source came close to the power & UX of Adobe's creative suite.

Worst-case Scenario: I sell the MacBook Pro at a small loss e.g: £300 (so I "lose" £150) (which would be a bargain for the next owner!) But I keep all the software on a backup drive.
