Motorising instructions: https://hackaday.com/2019/01/23/motorizing-an-ikea-skarsta-table
I've never seen any Ikea products with free delivery but absolutely, we need to get started on this soon so let's get it done 😊 Please come speak to me and we'll get you set up with MB Way (so you can make purchases with the right bank cards online)!
@iteles Sounds good. Thanks! 👍
The final price would be this, including delivery (because the desk is too big for the free delivery options):
Thanks for checking the checkout price. 👍 Annoying that the desk is no longer in stock in Braga ... 😞
@iteles as much as it pains me to "over-spend" on this, 💸 I feel that the health benefits of a standing desk definitely outweigh the cost. 🤔
My intention with this repo is to create my own standing desk design from scratch. 👷 I could just bite the bullet and design/make a prototype now ... 💭
I would suggest that there are other way higher priorities for your time this week than making the standing desk prototype and if you give me the go-ahead, I'll get it bought and delivered for Monday/Tuesday
@iteles agreed. Please place the order. thanks. 👍
I've been using the IKEA SKARSTA sit/stand Desk for 3 months and it's been good. 👍
Two things I've noted
I often have 3 PCs on my desk (Macbook Pro, Windows Laptop and Linux Laptop) for testing things and it can feel cluttered. Yes, I know about VMWare/Parallels/VirtualBox and running different OSes in virtualised containers I have done that before and it's "ok" ... I just prefer running my systems on native hardware and I have the hardware on-hand. I'm lucky that I've been able to get jobs in the past that mean I can afford to have 3 PCs. Also, the Windows PC is a refurbished Lenovo x230 laptop that cost $250 on eBay and the Linux laptop was $130, so I don't feel like I'm being extravagant by having multiple machines. After all, I use these computers to make money and
I wish I had spent the extra money to buy the L-shaped desk so that I could have more working space while I have multiple machines + paper notebook, etc. on the desk ... https://www.ikea.com/pt/en/p/bekant-left-hand-corner-table-top-white-stained-oak-veneer-40366276/
But I'm not going to spend €119 (+€35 for delivery!) for the L-shaped table top now because it would make the desk €350 which I feel is extortionate for a desk! (even if I'm lucky enough to be able to afford it ... it's still insane!)
So I'm going to have to come up with a "hack" to (a) get more desk/storage space and (b) integrate cable management so it doesn't feel so cluttered
RODULF
desk is new
this year: https://www.ikea.com/pt/en/p/rodulf-desk-sit-stand-grey-white-s99326170/
Just the RODULF
structure is €229
:
https://www.ikea.com/pt/pt/p/rodulf-estrut-inf-sentado-de-pe-p-tampo-branco-60464290/
However, suuuuper annoyingly, the 140x80cm
desk dimensions mean that there's only one option for desk!!
https://www.ikea.com/pt/en/search/products/?q=140x80
Not a fan of a dark grey desk ... 💭 Would much prefer white or wood. 🪵
Ouch ... 20% inflation Price Hike! 🤦♂️ Wish I'd got it when it was first announced. 🙄
Similar price gouge on the underframe / structure: https://www.ikea.com/pt/en/p/rodulf-underframe-sit-stand-f-table-top-white-60464290/
Currently in the whole country, there's only 1 for sale on OLX: https://www.olx.pt/d/ads/q-ikea-RODULF/

Braga of all places!
Inquiry sent to seller. ✉️ ⏳ 🤞 (100% getting it if still available)
Just the Table top is 80
:
https://www.ikea.com/pt/en/p/rodulf-table-top-grey-50464304/
So there's no "penalty" for buying the frame and top separately.
I would probably get the Bamboo table top instead of this grey [cheap-looking/feeling] one: https://www.ikea.com/pt/en/p/anfallare-table-top-bamboo-00465141/
Yes, the dept is less at 65cm but that's actually a good thing for space-saving. 💭
I've sent the seller of the [second-hand] RODULF
frame https://github.com/nelsonic/standing-desk/issues/26#issuecomment-1336027726 3 messages.
Offering to pay cash and collect it at his convenience:
No answer so far. ⏳
I'm obvs a fan of not wasting natural resources on stuff if possible, but really not holding my breath on this ... 🤷♂️
Lately I have been suffering from too much sitting down.
I spend around 12 hours at my desk each day and it's been causing me pain. I won't bore you with details, but if you're interested, read: startstanding.org/sitting-back-pain I've had a make shift standing desk in the past and I've benefitted from the experience.
TL;DR
: I'm buying a standing desk which I plan to use while I am writing code.@home we are going to need to buy/make 20+ desks for the main co-working room. I fully intend to design these from scratch and
make
them on our laser cutter and Open Source it. We also need a couple of desks for the Studio; I intend to put the IKEA sit/stand desk in the studio.A search for the keywords "standing desk" on IKEA (UK) returns the following top results: https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/search/products/?q=standing%20desk
SKARSTA Desk sit/stand, white, 120x70 cm https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/skarsta-desk-sit-stand-white-s59324818/
Product size
It uses a hand crank to adjust height:
I think if this was my only desk, using a hand crank would get old very quickly! But since I'm lucky enough to have two desks I expect to leave the standing desk in a permanent standing position.
There is actually nothing "New" about the SKARSTA Desk. This review is from 2015:
https://youtu.be/62hi92hMjjU ... Review after two weeks of use: https://youtu.be/sV1R4If_KhY
Scott Stack added a couple of motors, a PSU and some basic switches to his SKARSTA to motorise it: https://youtu.be/pKyYEM-dN2o
So in addition to having a relatively cheap standing desk option, we could also produce a much better video on how to retrofit/mod/ikeahack it with a motor and some electronics. 💡
It costs €199 in PT which (for once) is cheaper than the UK!! (€199 = £173 at the time of writing) https://www.ikea.com/pt/pt/p/skarsta-secretaria-sentado-em-pe-branco-s59324818/
Includes free shipping/delivery. 😮
Thinking of placing the order today. @iteles any thoughts/objections to this?
