Two requested fire updates #16

Per Steve:

1.) Here is a link to the 2012 MODIS hotspots that need to be downloaded and posted under Fire, next to the 2010 and 2011 hotspots that are already shown. These hotspots largely include crop residue fires in ag lands, wildfires and prescribed fires, the latter of which we care about but have no other record of. Download 2012 hotspots here: http://activefiremaps.fs.fed.us/data/fireptdata/modisfire_2012_conus.htm

2.) In addition, we need to update the individual fire years to 2010 based on MTBS’ dataset. You can download their whole package here that includes 2010, then select 2010 out to make a separate layer as we show for the years 2000-2009 already. Matt already has this: http://www.mtbs.gov/compositfire/mosaic/bin-release/burnedarea.html. As before, we don’t need to retain any of the tabular data that comes with these, just the location.

3.) Although provisional and selected 2011 and 2012 perimeters are available through another service, the Geomac.gov website: http://www.geomac.gov/index.shtml, these data are only large fires that receive a particular class of response (usually Federal) and are not the entire set of large fires unlike MTBS. Don’t worry about this right now, as every state and fire is separate (and there are multiple entries for individual fires as they progress). I will work on this myself, then I suggest we add these annual products as unique polygon layers, then as MTBS is updated, we can replace these years with that dataset as it is more accurate. Note that we have 2012 in the consolidated rasterized layer already.
