Engineering is a whole other profession.
While I do agree with you that the term "engineer" has been over-used...the ship has since sailed on that front, and the overuse is now mainstream. We might as well adopt to the overuse. Besides, if we stick with the term "software developer", we are limiting ourselves to only those people who build software, excluding a vast group of other technical-minded folks in other fields like DevOps (DevOps Engineer/Site Reliability Engineers), databases (Database Engineers), QA (QA Engineer/Test Engineers), support (Technical Support Engineers), and marketing (Sales Engineers and Growth Hackers).
