Installed Desktop 1.1.13 - cannot start because in offline mode #42

I was nodged to install an update to Neo4j Desktop. (From itself). It installed 1.1.13, which starts, but in offline mode. And the screen rendering is completely garbage. See enclosed screendump. How do I get out of this situation when Desktop is useless? Best neo4jdesktopstuck I am on Mac OS X 10.11.6. And have been running like a dream for a couple of years!

Going back to 1.1.12 removed the rendering problems. And the Desktop found its way back to online! Thanks Michael!

The hardware that I am using is a MacBook Air primo 2014 with a builtin Intel HD Graphics 5000 processor, 1536 MB. 4 GB memory.

@ThomasFrisendal Have you tried launching Desktop 1.1.13 with a --disable-gpu flag?

ThomasFrisendal commented 5 years ago

Hi Sergey, No, I did not think about that. I have been running Desktop for years without problems. I just installed 1.1.13, and the problem appeared. And since I could not see any way to force it online, I had to revert (on Michael's recommandation) to 1.1.12. Best regards

Thomas

@ThomasFrisendal probably, the UI got shattered by either outdated gpu driver or outdated os version. As the Desktop 1.1.13 has got its update on the Electron version, compatibility for older OS version could suffer.

I've seen these artifacts before and there is the workaround to use the command line flag --disable-gpu.

Regarding the offline mode - 1.1.13 has got a more advanced mechanism for setting the offline mode so that the UI experience is better for those with a bad internet connection (like travelling people). The offline mode could be easily disabled in settings sidebar.

Hi Sergey

I am on Mac OS X El Capitan, version 10.11.6. I believe that many Mac users are still using that. My main reason for not going to Mojave (10.14.2) is that I am short of disk space and cannot find time right now to get another 10GB cleaned up.

Best Thomas

@ThomasFrisendal I'm sorry to hear that! We try to deliver as more features as we can, so the Desktop engine does need to be upgraded from time to time. It is possible to start Neo4j Desktop using older versions of MacOs, but still, we recommend using the latest OS version, as it delivers best user experience and does not cause any compatibility issues or glitches with the latest Neo4j Desktop.
