I sometimes experience an error reporting that the database could not start successfully (I currently use Desktop 1.3.11). However, the database in fact just required too much time to come up especially when my laptop is under load - while in a skype video session and simultaneous screen sharing for instance.
The problem is, that when the error occurs but the db comes up you end up in a state where you can't shut the db down. The only way is to reload desktop (command-R on OS X).
