Started as a cleanup but ended up implementing the things I had filed for before

It's so bad that I didn't get notification about this PR and all those issues (now I watch this repo and hopefully will get nitifications) and I made some small changes. Would you mind rebasing this?

So a rebase isnt gonna work since there isnt a line I didnt change, but I will try reverse rebasing, put my changes on top and backport yours
