I can get around this for now using scheduled backup of Turnkey servers with the Elastic Block Storage snapshots that EC2 provides.

just a note while researching this - from the tkblam faq:

Which databases are supported? Currently only MySQL. PostgreSQL support is under development. Support for additional databases will be added as needed. Currently TurnKey appliances only include MySQL and PostgreSQL databases.
