What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Download and compile supertux-0.3.4.tar.bz2
2. Attempt to play.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Expect to be able to play the game. Can't.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

0.3.4, Debian Wheezy

The title and description of this issue do not seem to match. I am going to
assume that the description is just poor to the point of being useless since it
implies that the game won't even start despite the issue being listed for a
specific level.

Does the following describe the issue?
1) start game from main menu (after first-time installation)
2) level "Picnic with Penny" automatically loads
3) abort level
4) level automatically loads again
Thus the player has no other gameplay option until the intro is played through
entirely.

If this is the problem it can probably be fixed, despite the trivial workaround
of just finishing the level. If the game won't play at all, you're going to
have to give some useful info before the issue can be addressed.

I have just tried the git version and the bug as reported in the first comment
is still there. If supertux is started in fullscreen mode, the user might not
know how to get out of the application at all.

Clicking "Abort level" in the intro should take the user to the starting screen
and not the map.

The problem is that as the level starts automatically when you enter in the
level maps, it doesn't give you any chance to open the menu where you can
select "Quit World".

I'm attaching a workaround to disable the auto-start of the level. A more
proper fix would be not auto-starting the level if it comes from a previous
aborted run.

I've applied a more permanent solution in revision f90508343f19. Any auto-run
level is now automatically marked as solved. Should prevent any future similar
problems, even in custom worldmaps. I'll assume this is what the OP was
reporting and close the issue, if there is some other issue a new ticket may be
started.
