I find that the death sound is quite loud and startling.

In 0.3.4, it was improved as there is a separate "hurt" sound.

I modified the hurt sound, playing around with it in Audacity.

I attached my candidate as a wav file, and my Audacity project

I have heard this complaint before. And honestly I've been startled myself
when getting killed when I wasn't expecting it (although I always thought that
was part of the fun).

The quick repetition of the hurt sound that has been attached would certainly
work. Alternatively, the volume of the current sound could be reduced. It is
certainly something worth considering.

I personally do not think the sound is too loud or startling. I think it's just about right. ...but that's my two cents.

My personal opinion of a sound that is too startling comes from an old game from the Nintendo 64 called "Tetrisphere". Try dropping a piece in an incorrect location on the sphere, especially when under deep concentration, and you get hit with an extremely really loud "lost a life" sound! The difference in that case is that it can be completely unexpected, unlike in SuperTux when you know it's coming, and I'd say it is about twice to three times as loud as the "lost a life" sound on SuperTux. And while the "lost a life" sound sounds like a popped balloon on SuperTux, the sound on Tetrisphere was somewhere between a peel of thunder and an explosion.
