Hi Gilles - Thanks for this as well. I might hold off on merging this for a bit, since the automake rules for the test cases still need updated to support VPATH builds (mostly changing top_srcdir to top_builddir) in a couple of places. I'll take a look at this and will merge once I square away the latter.

Thanks again for this, but I'm going to go ahead and close this PR. With the recent merge of PR #11 it looks like most of the out-of-source build issues are now taken care of (in addition to some other cleanup).
