4 years ago I always found this icon very wrong, and you are right, the lack of vertical centering really is the issue. I did what I could using inkscape:
I also made another attempt, but the spacing might be too subtle for an icon:

The icon feels very cramped when in a circle (Which is how stock android shows it). I installed from F-Droid, hence this icon, not the one that's currently on the play store. I'd suggest the icon just gets shrunk a bit and moved down a bit too. It might not be technically centered but it'd feel more centered, if that makes sense.
