Although this will be replaced later on by cmake, I think it would be good to still merge it now as it gives an immediate improvement. @JoseJVS Do you have any comments?

Add header files.
Convert maxregcount to environmntal variable with a default of 55 (works everywhere but is not optimal, e.g., on A100) to be set with ./configure. Also add info to documentation.
