An easier approach is to use a Markdown only editor, like the one in GitHub.

With http://sofish.github.io/pen/ I couldn't edit some parts of the Markdown (e.g. remove the quotes), and there was a select box around the oh my god text that looked weird.

Pen is simple, but SimpleMDE seems more complete. Going with it for now.
