rainsd, rainspub, and rainsdig should support exchange of RAINS messages over SCION UDP sockets. RAINS over SCION UDP has the following restrictions with respect to the base protocol:
The maximum message size is constrained by MTU; RAINS by default will keep messages below 1440 bytes. This implies limits on shard size and zone transfer size in RAINS over SCION, which must be implemented in rainspub.
RAINS over SCION UDP will not support datagram encryption. RAINS assertions (shards, p-shards, zones) will be protected by the signatures added during publication. Queries and messages will not be protected, and may be inspected and modified on path.
We do not intend to address these restrictions, since RAINS over SCION UDP is a stopgap solution until SCION transport protocol development has progressed to the point that a reliable transport exists that is stable enough to use for SCION infrastructure itself.
rainsd should advertise listening for SCION UDP packets as a separate capability.
