An error has occured - couldn't initialize python shell - 0.15.8 (64 bit) beta #92

I am having trouble running 0.15.8 (64 bit) beta for Windows on Windows 10 Home.

Error upon starting stimfit: 1) An error has occured - couldn't initialize python shell and following a click 2) an error has occured - can't create a window for the python shell pointer is zero"

"Traceback (most recent call last): File "", line 3, in File "embedded_stf.py", line 20, in from embedded_init import intro_msg File "embedded_init.py", line 16, in import numpy as np ImportError: No module named numpy"

I tried installing with admin privileges and directly installing python 2.7.14 directly from (https://www.python.org/downloads/release/python-2714/) - neither worked.

I can not reproduce this, I guess there is some conflict with some other python installation. Stimfit on windows is somehow picky and does not work well with ther python versions on the same system. The following approach might break some of your other python installations.

If you want to get stimfit running, I recommended the following: 1) uninstall stimfit 2) Delete c:\python2.7. This might contain some other than 2.7.14 python modules which cause the problem. 3) reboot (not sure whether this is really needed) 4) reinstall Stimfit I just tested this again on Windows 10, using the default install options, and can than start Stimfit.

I know that some user had also problems when Anaconda is also installed on the same system, and they managed to disentangle the different python versions somehow.

Do this hints help ?

Hi Christoph,

thanks for the really fast reply!

I managed to fix it, but in a convoluted way.

First installed 0.15.8 (which didn't initialize the python shell)

Then I installed 0.14.14 (which was working a colleagues computer). This installs python 2.7.9.

I can then start 0.15.8 and the shell initializes.

it's more of an issue when trying to fit curves, etc.
