Camera options for pupil tracking #8

Requirements

USB2 interface may be a dying breed, I could only find 2 suppliers with a quick search. imagingSource FLIR

I only have limited experience and welcome suggestions. Previously we had issues with dropped frames and thus video synchronization with ephys recordings. As now both data streams are going to be in Bonsai, this may not be an issue anymore (and thus triggering frames may not be necessary).

@ederancz I am more familiar with FLIR and that option looks like it would fit requirements. @glopesdev have we used any other USB cameras with trigger options recently?

ederancz commented 1 year ago

OK, I have asked for a quote from FLIR for their USB2 camera. Still interested in what you think @glopesdev, if you have had experience with pupil tracking.

glopesdev commented 1 year ago

In term of Bonsai integration of industrial cameras we have FLIR, Basler and IDS camera support available, all of them supporting triggering.

The Arducam apparently also support external triggers and there is also a Windows driver for their USB shields so it could be an interesting option to explore?

ederancz commented 1 year ago

That's really cool, thanks! I suggest getting both the FLIR and the Arducam and see how they behave over the rotary joint. Does it make sense?

Hi @RoboDoig, There are serious supply issues with cameras, so I decided to go with an available one, the FLIR FFY-U3-04S2M-S. While it is USB3, works perfectly fine over USB2 at the required frame rates. It is S-mount (works well in the small space available) and monochrome (colour one has an IR filter). Can you please order 2 of them? @glopesdev, is it OK if we will add this as well to the next payment?

glopesdev commented 1 year ago

@ederancz just to clarify, the idea is the order would come to London first so we test it?

ederancz commented 1 year ago

Yep. Plus I’m also a bit worried about availability and would take me several weeks to set them up on our ordering system…

@ederancz a final question, do you need any accessories for the camera, such as lenses, cables, GPIO cables, mounts, etc, or will you get this separately?

ederancz commented 1 year ago
