The "Oh no something went wrong" is produced by trying to run GNOME in a situation where it isn't supported.
You need to configure XFCE as the default X session manager, Have a look at this comment which should make clear how you can do this.

Any support for when we actually want to run Gnome within xrdp?
I'm getting the same error on gnome:
I have oracle cloud ubuntu 22.04 (arm64) headless instance. I just installed xfce4 and then sudo apt install xrdp. Whenever I enter user name and password and press enter I get this: sudo xrdp -v > 0.9.17
