When a new world readable (ie not Private) Space is created , unless opted out by a Create Space Option (default to yes) , a new Link item should be created in space/newspaces.
The item should be in the form:
title: NEW SPACE: "title of the space"
item created by: the user who created the Space.
excerpt box: the description of the Space
