Don't use magit-submode variable #2

Magit has no the magit-submode variable any more [1], [2]. That raises messages about missing magit-submode variable.

@nex3 I'm still getting an error about this when I try to use "browse item" functionality.

At some point I'm going to do a thorough upgrade of this to make it compatible with the latest magit, but for now I'm just going to merge in patches for compatibility.
