This would be great. I'm also using Home Assistant and was thinking of suggesting the same thing here.
As a workaround, you can setup a DNS server at home (or e.g. piHole which has the added benefit of ad blocking) and map your domain to your local IP. That way, when you're in your home network, the IP will be resolved to the local address and you get a direct connection to the server. That's how I have set it up and it works without any problems.
