Photos section evolution

Because of multiple feature request (eg. #6297, #6784, #7128, #7451, #7452) on the Photos section of the android application, may I suggest to discuss about what the Photos section should be and how it should evolve ?

Questions

For now, in addition of file management and thanks to developers, the Nextcloud Android App is also dealing with Photo/Video backup ... but what's next ?

Keeping in mind that server side Photos app is also evolving with many interesting features and features requests (eg. virtual album, face recognition, etc.) what about Photos section in the Android App :

My Opinion

As an end user : now that Google Photo announced that the free tiers is gonna end (2020-07-01), I'm looking for a real alternative and I really hope that nextcloud will be able to support one.

As a developer I think doing a standalone app can be a good idea:

I created a discussion on the forum to also get feedback from end user.

Looping in @tobiasKaminsky

I would rather enhance photo/media section in this app than creating a new one.

In general I would follow this approach: Discuss it on server/photo app, then implement the same feature set in clients. This way we stay somehow feature parallel, and discussion is centralized in one place.

I would rather enhance photo/media section in this app than creating a new one.

  • Most of info is otherwise duplicated
  • App can benefit from another active devs, not sharing limited dev capacity
  • from user/UX: only one app, not different, as it is "still" about files (not like e.g. bookmark, deck, notes app).

In general I would follow this approach: Discuss it on server/photo app, then implement the same feature set in clients. This way we stay somehow feature parallel, and discussion is centralized in one place.

I agree with you that if we stick to "photo display" and "sync" feature It's still about file and it's totally fine. But if you think different and look for photo oriented features/apps it's more about : Virtual folder (album), Recognition, location, memories and so on. Furthermore the UI needs for those photos oriented features would differ from file oriented UI and both could'nt fit in the very same client app without badly impacting the UX (like nested navigation).

I don't know if you are familiar with Google ecosystem but I recommend you to check Files and Photos apps to see what I mean about the UI/features.

@tobiasKaminsky @nimishavijay What do you think?

Another open source standalone photo app: https://github.com/scubajeff/lespas

And maybe it could be worthwhile to connect to the developer ( @scubajeff ) which is very active.

Is there any new information on this topic? I could not find any other issues or more recent information about whether there will be official Nextcloud support for an Android Photos app.

Would be very nice if there could be official support from Nextcloud. And potentially leveraging the active current alternatives such as Les Pas or NC-Photos. Would be nice to see an official app combining the very well-developed caching and picture managing features from Les Pas but also including new features like Nextcloud Albums and the peoples functionalities which are available in NC-Photos :)
