There actually are plugins. However they don't work yet for the AppImage. I still have to find the time to think how to properly do that.
@rullzer so this is only not working for AppImages?

I am afraid this is still the case in 3.1.2...
Honestly I don't think this is doable with AppImage, this requires installing a plugin in the system from the AppImage... just this in itself sounds nasty to me.
Might be true. Then I'd add a warning on the download page stating that one does not get full system integration with AppImage (probably with an example to not scare the users) and that other methods of installation are recommended for that.
Also pinging @probonopd maybe he knows a good solution.

Sir, may I ask? Did the OP change the description or is there a non-AppImage install variant for ubuntu?

I didn't change any description.
(I'm meanwhile on a different system (Manjaro+xfce+thunar) where I don't have any desktop integrations installed, so not following this issue anymore really.)

Upon the launch of the AppImage, a script inside the AppImage could write the files needed for system integration to the places needed under ~
.
Alternatively, there could be a menu entry in the Nextcloud Desktop GUI to install desktop integration. When the user would choose that menu, it could be explained to the user what is about to happen, and the files could be written to where they need to go.

In my opinion, this being installed is something I'd anticipate or even expect, and with the usability improvement it brings I think having it on by default or at least an active question to the user if they want it is appropriate. 😅
are there any news available on this topic yet?
Debian 12/gnome with AppImage user here: i'd love this feature. It helps a lot for quickly sharing files from the desktop environment.
Also, keep up the damned good work. Nextcloud with me for years now and it's awesome.
@camilasan is there something coming realistically? or should we close it?
Definitely low prio, as most people have Mac or Win desktops, but still nice to have at some point eventually:
On Linux desktops (i.e. Ubuntu Gnome), as opposed to Windows and Mac, there is no context menu for the files/folders in the Nextcloud synced folder. Also noticing that the green check symbols don't show there either. Is it possible to add this to Linux without too much effort considering the different desktop environments?
DB has both on the same system:
