Steps to reproduce

Installion Client 3.3.3 Mac
Restart Mac or Logoff/Logon User (MacOS 11 and 12 Beta)

Expected behaviour

Desktop Client should start sync with saved credentials

Actual behaviour

Logon is neccessary, Client starts the logon procedure automatically

Server configuration

Operating system: unknown, Provider

I have the exact same behaviour also for 3.3.3 but on Linux. Output of nextcloud --version:

I couldn't open the nextcloud.log in download.zip

Please provide the desktop client logs:

Since 3.1: Under the "General" settings, you can click on "Create Debug Archive ..." to pick the location of where the desktop client will export the logs and the database to a zip file.

The problem first occurred when I updated from 3.3.5 to 3.3.6. After a downgrade to 3.3.5 however, it still persisted.

There are a few useful additional logs in https://github.com/nextcloud/desktop/issues/4095#issue-1082637015.

Fwiw, what I've been observing on Linux:

first the client requests the global keyring to be unlocked
the Linux keyring handler asks me for my password to unlock the keyring
while it's doing this, the web page requesting the login opens up in the background

This could suggest a race condition when the passwords are unlocked: I would expect that first Nextcloud would wait on the global keyring to be unlocked (or not, if the user cancelled the operation), and then only try to use the web login. Of course I have no clues and haven't looked at the code, so this is just a very wild guess.

Fwiw, something has changed either on my system (ArchLinux) or my client. The OS requests to unlock the global keyring first, before any Web browser window opens up, even if I don't enter my global keyring's password right away. So issue seems to have fixed itself in my case, somehow.

I don't understand why this is closed; there have been comments and it's clear it's a valid bug.

I have been seeing this recently on a family member's computer, macOS 12, after restarts following power loss. It's a major usability issue as not only is there a login hurdle for something that isn't directly relevant to why the computer was powered up, but the login flow doesn't really work -- perhaps because firefox is in a "restore session" query state after booting after a power failure. Subsequent pushing of the login button under the 3 dots menu for the account under the pulldown arrow under the taskbar icon (yes, it's hard for normal people to figure this out) doesn't cause any activity.

Interestingly, the browser session with NC is still logged in, just as I'd expect. So there seem to be two bugs:

not storing the desktop client's credentials, or not getting them back, or not realizing they are there
when it's necessary to re-authenticate, state machine issues that result in bad flow to browser. I speculate that subsequent pushes of login don't send another request to the browser.

I'm having same issue, but I believe this is related to specific Linux (macOS?) setup only.

On sway app doesn't launch at login, bot when I switch to other DE like gnome (which I had installed for a minute) it started at login and righ away asked for keyring password. Is there a chance that app require some sort of keyring/password manager (like gnome-keyring) as dependency to store ceredentials? Isn't it possible to store some keys in GPG?

I am also having the issue, with what I think is up-to-date nextcloud on up-to-date macOS. On a macOS 10.13 machine, NC starts without needing to authenticate, and I don't know if that's because the bug isn't triggered on 10.13, or if older NC stored the credentials ok and the new code can use them but not store them, or something else.

Same for me. Nextcloud 25.0.6 running on Armbian in a docker. 5 Different desktop clients (latest), various OS, windows 10, macOS Ventura, Big Sur. All of them need constant reauthentication, sometimes multiple times a day.
