Old mails deleted on other clients still show up as unread in Mail, when opened "Not found" #8223

Steps to reproduce

  1. Use Mail a bunch as your main Mail app
  2. Also use another mail client e.g. something on mobile
  3. At some point see outdated mails in Mail, even indicated as unread

Expected behavior

No non-existent mails should show up in Mail, especially not indicated as unread. If the preview line can not be fetched, maybe it’s better to not show it in the message list to begin with? (It could still be loaded in later if the mail is retrieved.)

Actual behavior

The 3 mails of upgrade, activity, and invitation are actually deleted. They show up in the list without preview text line, and indicated as unread. When opening, they show "Not found": image

FYI this might be related to https://github.com/nextcloud/mail/issues/3049 but that issue seems broader, is old already and the discussion is too heated.

I have the same problem here. Running nextcloud 25.0.4 and mail app version 2.2.4

Same issue NC 26.0.0 Mail Version 3.0.2. Docker install using MYSQL backend.

I'm also seeing this when connecting to a PurelyMail account via imap. If i archive an email in PurelyMail webmail, then refresh in nextcloud, the email remains in the inbox and cannot be opened for viewing: image

I've been using NC Mail for a few years now and have learned to deal with most of the issues, but this one has me temporarily using something else. The issue results in many console logs, and an inability to archive messages that show in the NC inbox but are really not there because they have already been archived by my mobile client: image

It also sometimes results in an endless flurry of desktop notifications saying there are new messages in my inbox: image

@ChristophWurst I patched the changes into my instance but it doesn't seem to have fixed it for old or new emails despite reloading the page and rebooting nextcloud: image

Ok, Thanks. I did try to manually run the cron job via sudo -u www-data php /var/www/nextcloud/cron.php but maybe there's a different cron script that needs to run.

This PR has not been merged yet, which means it is not included in any release. You have to apply the patch manually and don't update because it will get overwritten again.

Interesting. Were you experiencing the issue prior to the patch?

Before upgrading I applied the patch and it wasn't working for me despite waiting for the cron job to run. Was there anything else you needed to do?

Just to follow up here, I'm still seeing the issue despite applying the patch, rebooting, waiting a few days, and removing/re-adding my mail account, and updating to v3.3.0-alpha.1.

If i archive an email from nextcloud, the other clients properly show it as archived, but if i archive it from my other clients (Thunderbird, Fairmail) then nextcloud still shows it in the inbox and when selected, nextcloud says "Could not Load Message" as indicated above.

I'm just reporting this here in case others are seeing the same thing, but i will wait until the next mail version is released before re-reporting this issue in case i didn't apply the manual patch correctly. Here's the releavant section of my ImapToDbSynchronizer.php file with patch applied: image

I confirm I still have issues (for me mail deleted from other clients show a "Not found") with Nextcloud 27.0.1 and Mail app 3.2.4.

Just some minutes ago i did disable the "RainLoop" App, because it is not recommended (depreciated).

But as far i see, RainLoop did run without any issues.

There was a guy, saying that the issue may come from the cache, when different mapi clients trying to update the cache !?

I agree, by now my Nextcloud Mail is totally out of sync with my IMAP account. All other clients (K-9 on my phone, KMail on my workstation, and Roundcube when I am at other PCs) do sync well. Unfortunately I am unable to contribute to fixing the problem.

@bovender you should be able to just clear the cache on the Nextcloud inbox to get synced up. Its not a permanent fix, but better than nothing.

I am unable to enable debug mode. Recently, it was still possible to simply open the “corrupted” messages and delete those. This would throw an error, but he corrupted message would still be removed. Thus, I was able to simply open all corrupted messages and delete those manually.

Since one of the last updates, deleting corrupted messages, does not work anymore. After deleting, the message is removed but shortly after pops up again. So I guess the only way is to remove all accounts and add those again.

However, regarding the issue of messages becoming corrupted in the first place, I guess this issue has been resolved. I haven't received any corrupted messages since September 14th. So might have been fixed by some of those updates :tada: :upside_down_face:

Clear local cached data feature works for me and fixes orphaned email that is no longer on the server.

Can this feature be made permanent so debug mode can be turned off?

3.4.0 here too and yes, I have the same problem on a fresh install - 2 IMAP accounts set up and issue with them both.

NB. I use Windows based app (emClient) to access the same accounts.

Yeah, I also just realized that it works sometimes and sometimes not, so it doesn't seem to be related to the folder.. :slightly_frowning_face:

Interesting thought! Mine is the standard deployment of AIO nextcloud, so I am using AOCu, yes ....

I use Redis on my server. I have the same issue with 3.4.0
