Remove calendar info from XIOS test XML file

Fixes #571

Minor changes to enable setting up XIOS without a calendar entry in the XML file, plus some minor additions.

NOTE: #559 will need to be merged first.

Update the XIOS integration tests accordingly and test out the new functionality.

Managed to get this working! Ready for review, but #559 will need to be merged first so won't assign reviewers just yet.
