Added debug switch for error-tracing
Fixed bug with unapplied SPI settings and did some cleanup
SPI speed is now set to F_CPU / 2 (maximum)

It's really great that you're contributing to this project and I really appreciate it. The material changes in this PR look sensible and useful, so thank you very much.

As I hinted in previous comments, you can improve your excellent PRs by not combining material changes (like debugging switches) with loads of cosmetic changes (such as changing double quotes to single quotes). Separating the two will make your PRs easier to read. I'd really appreciate it if future PRs kept these two things separated.
